7/25/2008 - American Hungarian Federation Participates in CEEC Meeting with Senator Schumer: Discusses Russia "Hegemony" statement... The American Hungarian Federation and other members of the Central East European Coalition (CEEC) met with Senator Charles Schumer (D–NY) this week. The purpose of the meeting was to seek clarification of statements contained in Senator Schumer’s June 3rd Wall Street Journal article that were susceptible to the interpretation that he condoned Russian designs on Central and Eastern Europe.
Senator Schumer assured the CEEC that he is committed to and strongly supports the continued freedom, democracy and independence of Central and Eastern Europe and that Moscow must never dominate the region again. “Senator Schumer was generous with his time and forthcoming,” said Federation Co-President Frank Koszorus, Jr., who led the discussion on this issue and thanked the Senator for meeting with the CEEC to clarify this important matter. "But if left unclarified, the statements about Moscow's 'dream of eventually restoring Russian hegemony over Eastern Europe,' would send a terrible message with negative consequences," added Mr. Koszorus. The CEEC will continue to work with the Senator's office on this issue.
